This course is for painters, illustrators, concept artists, animators, 3d artists, sculptors… well, everyone. I will teach you how to use a camera as a tool for visual storytelling. Even if you do not have the budget to buy a camera, this course will be helpful. I will show you how to see from a Cinematographer’s perspective, how to frame and light compositions. At the end of this course you will be able to recognize lens types, shot types, how lighting is created in photos and movies.
Do you need a fancy camera to take this course? No. You can just use your phone camera for most of it. But... I will show how more professional and prosumer cameras work and give suggestions for what you could consider buying if you want to delve deeper at the end. What You'll Learn
Understanding Cameras
I think as artists understanding how to manually control cameras will elevate our painting and drawing skills even if we don't direct use the photos we take. Just by taking the time to explore the shots and observe the real world will gain us understanding through curiosity. But during this course I will show you everything you need to know about cameras and how to use it as an artistic tool.
Still Life, Portraits, Landscapes and more
I will show you how to craft, light and capture compelling subjects including still life's, portraits, landscapes, macro (tiny things), astrophotography (night shots of stars), and textures to use in your art. This course is amazingly practical to allow you to apply what you learn to your other arts directly.
Videography and Cinematography
As someone who has worked on dozens of films and shows I really wish for my students to explore the realms of storytelling with video and cinema. So we'll start by teaching how to shoot compelling stills and then move on to videography and cinematography. What is the difference you may ask? In my mind videography is capturing life as it is... weddings, trips, events, animals in nature. It's all about how to sort through the chaos of reality to find subjects that are clear and beautiful in motion. Cinematography on the other hand is the craft of manipulating the real world in order to tell a specific story. This is where we bring in actors and lighting gear and make movie scenes and short films. I'll teach it all in this course.
Postproduction and Editing
I will also show what to do with your RAW photos and how to process them in a way that shows their most potential. When we get to video i will also show how to craft scenes.
Practical Exercises for Skill Development
Through practical assignments, such as photographing fast and slow moving objects, making still life's and more, students apply what they've learned in a hands-on manner to cement their skills.
